Tech Exposure Camps are our annual training workshops aimed to inspire and equip university and college students in Africa to thrive in the 21st century global workplace. The one-week hybrid event is designed to provide students with exposure to opportunities in the Africa tech industry and beyond, elevate the next generation of tech leaders in Africa, and building a thriving truly African-centered technology ecosystem. It includes hands-on training in both technical and soft skills, aiming to educate the students on skills and knowledge for the AI economy, incubate entrepreneurship initiatives to foster youth-led enterprises, and create pipelines and programs to connect talented students with tech employers on the continent.

Goals and Objectives

The convergence of AI, Android, and languages presents unprecedented opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa. As AI technology becomes increasingly accessible, understanding its application in various real-world scenarios is crucial for aspiring tech professionals. With over 90% of mobile phone users in Africa using Android, the demand for skilled Android developers has never been higher, and thousands of languages spoken across the continent, there is a critical need for applications and AI models that reflect Camp aims to equip university students across Africa with essential knowledge and skills necessary to build for this exciting space where generative AI, mobile technology, and linguistic diversity intersect.

Objectives:

  • Product Innovation: Equip underserved students with in-demand tech skills for a better future, and foster AI and Android expertise to drive innovation and economic growth.
  • Exposure and Inspiration:Unleash the students’ entrepreneurial potentials and inspire AI-powered solutions for Africa’s societal and economic challenges.
  • Talent Acquisition: Identify and engage promising students and young developers in Africa, and build a program to connect them to opportunities in the tech industry
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Encourage the development of Africa-tailored applications and culturally relevant technology that reflects the continent’s rich linguistic diversity

Goal
  • Expose the students to opportunities in Google Africa and the African tech industry, including Google tools and services such as Google Students Developer Club, Google Design Thinking and Google Africa Research.
  • Provide the students with hands-on training on on-demand technical and soft skills required to thrive as professionals, innovators and entrepreneurs in the 21st century tech world.
  • Create a pipeline for connecting the best talents in African universities with tech employers on the African continent with the aim of fostering economic opportunity and a strong workforce for Africa.
Participation
  • 34 students attended in-person, and over 100 students participated virtually from over 15 universities across 4 African countries.
  • Over 8 university faculties, including the VC of SDD-UBIDS, Ghana, 5 thought leaders and startup founders from Africa
  • Over 12 tech professionals from Google, Meta and Africa-based startups delivered talks and trainings
Impact
  • 2 students secured internship jobs at tech startups
  • 1 student launched a startup focusing on design and filming
  • 1 student secured a national award
  • More than half of the students completed different certification courses in Al and software development and joined the Google Developer Students Club
